Today's the last day of Comic Con, and I'm not sure how I feel about it all yet. As always it was great to meet fans and fellow cartoonists. Once again I was personally gratified to see people pick up one of our books one day, then come back the next and buy the rest because they had loved the first one so much. It's nice to see validation that our sense of humor and point of view has appeal outside the world of librarians and booksellers. We loved sharing a booth with Jorge Cham of Piled Higher and Deeper. And The Webcomics Section, the "Sunday funnies" that we made with 18 other cartoonists, was a big hit at the show.
On the other hand Comic Con is changing, and is a little less about comics every year. It's hard to compete for people's attention with movie and TV stars. And speaking of movies and TV, to see Joss Whedon speak I would have needed to take the entire day off to wait in line, something I couldn't really afford to do since we need to sell stuff nonstop just to break even at this very expensive show. Fortunately I did get a fanboy moment when I had a chance to speak to Judd Winnick, whose Frumpy the Clown was a huge inspiration for me when I returned to cartooning as an adult.
So for now I'll be glad to get home late tonight after a 17 day roadtrip. On a related note, tomorrow's strip will show up in pencilled form until I finally wake up to ink it.
