Pimp My Bookcart 2009 : Where are the Wild Things?

from Beaumont Branch of the Lexington Public Library

For the “Pimp My Bookcart” project, we at Beaumont found our inspiration in the pages of the beloved children’s book – and recent movie and novel adaptation- Where The Wild Things Are. With “Green” and the economy and recycling in mind we rounded up all the junk laying around – lots of old newspapers, tape and receipt paper cores, paper towel rolls, shoeboxes, scrap cardboard and plastic. Our little Wild Things are sculpted out of paper maché with balloons inside to make the forms. Max is a paper mache paper towel roll. The jungle trees are cardboard packing material wrapped around discarded book-tape centers. The backdrops are leftover bulletin board paper from a display. The cart is designed to depict two specific scenes as well; the lower tier is Max’s bedroom transforming into the jungle. The top tier is where Max has been crowned and the Wild Things are swinging through the trees. Some of our favorite and super-recycled details? One monster’s coiffure is made from withdrawn cassette tape and the Wild Things are strung from old Playaway headphones.

When we first looked at this, we thought Max and the Wild Things were store bought, but after some zooming, the high level of craftsmanship and the enormous amount of work that went into this scene became apparent. Another great green cart. They win a $50 gift certificate to the Unshelved store.
